A seven-year-old boy has succumbed to his injuries following a hit-and-run on Highway 401 near Mississauga.

According to OPP Const. Dave Woodford, a van carrying four children and two adults was travelling in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Dixie Road when it was struck from behind by a Hummer at around 4:30 p.m.

The Hummer then fled the scene.

The abandoned vehicle was located near Dixie Road some time later, but police have not apprehended the driver.

The boy was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The other occupants of the van were also transported to hospital as a precaution, but are not believed to have any significant injuries.

All four westbound collector lanes on Highway 401 at Dixie Road were closed to traffic as police investigated, but the highway fully reopened at around 10 p.m.
