Toronto council adopted a motion to ban right turns on red lights at the intersection where six-year-old Georgia Walsh was killed last month.

Georgia, the daughter of the Conservative Party of Canada’s president John Walsh, was fatally struck by a van on the afternoon of July 16 at the Leaside intersection of Millwood Road and McRae Drive.

Shortly after the collision, in which a 50-year-old unidentified driver was charged with failure to stop at a red light and careless driving, Leaside residents expressed concern about vehicles travelling too fast in the area.

Don Valley West Coun. John Parker also told CP24 that the residential neighbourhood had increasingly become a “commuter route” with drivers using it as a shortcut between Leaside and North Toronto.

The Millwood Road and McRae Drive intersection is close to a park, a playground, a community centre and a library. Children often cross the intersection walking to and from school.

Signs advising drivers not to turn right on red lights will go up at the intersection before school begins next week.
