Durham Regional Police say they have charged a Toronto couple after police found their children sleeping in an unlocked van outside a casino in Scugog, Ont. on Tuesday.

Police say they were called to the Great Blue Heron Casino on Island Road in Scugog, Ont., northeast of Port Perry on Tuesday night, where two children, ages three and five years old, were found sleeping in a van in the casino’s parking lot.

Police said the outside temperature in the area was around the freezing mark. The children “showed signs of being cold,” police said, but did not require medical treatment.

The two children were alone in the van for at least 30 minutes before their parents could be located, police said.

The mother of the children and her husband were taken into police custody and the children were given to the Children’s Aid Society.

A 58-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were each charged with two counts of child abandonment.

Both were held in custody pending a bail hearing.
