A 48-year-old woman is now facing charges in connection with the death of a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a vehicle on a sidewalk near the Rogers Centre earlier this month.

The incident happened on Bremner Boulevard, just east of Spadina Avenue, at around 2:15 p.m. on June 14.

According to police, a Mercedes sport utility vehicle was proceeding westbound toward Spadina Avenue when the driver made a lane change and suddenly accelerated. The vehicle mounted the north sidewalk and struck two women who were manning a booth at a local farmer’s market.

One of the women, a 38-year-old, was pinned against a retaining wall and was declared dead at the scene.

Her sister was injured and taken to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was treated for shock by paramedics.

Police have not said exactly why the vehicle suddenly accelerated. However charges were announced in a news release issued by police Thursday morning.

The female driver, who has not been named by police, is now charged with careless driving and making an unsafe lane change. She is set to make a court appearance on Sept. 1.
