The Fire Marshal has been called in after an early-morning fire completely destroyed a Brampton church on Saturday.
The two-alarm blaze broke out inside St. Elias The Prophet Ukranian Catholic Church on Heritage Road near Bovaird Drive at around 6:50 a.m., quickly spreading throughout the building.
About 15 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene, however by the time they arrived the building was fully engulfed in flames.
"Fire crews responded very quickly and by the time they arrived there was smoke and flame evident. Then by the time the first initial aparatus began firefigthing the flames were through the roof and this is all that remains," District Chief James Taylor told CP24 as he surveyed the rubble Saturday morning. "The church was made out of wood and it didn't take long for the fire to burn through the structure."
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
No injuries have been reported.
"This is a community of deep faith and this is just a tragedy but I know the Ukrainian people of Brampton and while they are saddened by this loss I am sure they will be determined to rebuild," Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell told CP24 at the scene Saturday morning.
