An Etobicoke MPP is pushing forward with a bill that would make the door-to-door sale of items such as water heaters and furnaces illegal.

Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker, who will be introducing the private members bill later today, says the legislation aims to protect vulnerable residents from aggressive door-to-door sales tactics and intimidation.

“Too many Ontarians have been taken advantage of by coercive and misleading sales tactics at the door. We must act now to stop this practice and to protect those Ontarians,” Baker said during a news conference Monday morning.

Baker said that while the province can’t stop people from going door-to-door, it can make any sales made at the door illegal.

“What I have done through this bill is make the contract void immediately upon signing,” he said.

“If the person is selling water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, water filtration systems… immediately the contract would become void and then the consumer would be entitled to get their money back.”

The business involved in the transaction, Baker added, could also be fined up to $25,000 for carrying out these sales.

Baker said MPPs will debate the bill at Queen’s Park on June 9.
