Four people have been taken to hospital after a fire at an Ajax apartment complex.

The fire broke out on the 17th floor of the Oxford Tower building on Exeter Road in the Highway 401 and Harwood Avenue area around 11:30 a.m.

Fire crews responded and knocked the blaze down.

Ajax Fire and Emergency Services said four people were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the fire.

About 30 residents who had to leave the building are currently being sheltered at a nearby community centre.

Firefighters said all residents are expected to be allowed back in their homes by the end of the day.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and there is no damage estimate yet.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to investigate due to the injuries and the extent of the damage, an Ajax fire official said.
