Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation into the death of a man who was struck by a car moments after he got into an altercation in Regent Park early Friday morning.

The man died after he was hit by the car on Dundas Street East, just east of Parliament Street, at about 5:50 a.m., and investigators believe the altercation with two men contributed to or caused his death.

Before he was struck, the victim wound up on the road during the altercation, police told CP24 reporter Cam Woolley.

Police said the man was dragged several metres and was under the westbound car when it came to a stop at Dundas and Regent streets. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police do not believe the car's driver was involved in the altercation.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
