Niagara Regional Police have charged a 71-year-old man with first-degree murder in the death of his 73-year-old wife, who was attacked in St. Catharines on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the attack occurred in a parking lot outside an apartment building on St. Augustine Drive as Judith Fraser returned to her residence at about 4:50 p.m.

Immediately after the attack, the suspect fled in a vehicle and Fraser was attended to by apartment residents, who called 911 and performed CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

Despite their efforts, Fraser was pronounced dead.

A short time later, police responded to a neighbourhood in Thorold, where a suspect was taken into custody. Police located the suspect's vehicle Friday.

The victim's estranged husband, George Fraser is charged with first-degree murder. The Fenwick resident remains in custody.

Police said the Frasers were married but they separated sometime before the attack.

Anyone with information about the homicide or the vehicle’s whereabouts is asked to call police at 905-688-4111 ext. 4200.
