One man is currently in custody following a wrong-way police pursuit on Highway 401 that ended in a crash in Scarborough Wednesday night.

It began with a call reporting a suspected impaired driver shortly before 10 p.m.

According to Durham police, officer began pursuing a van travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

The chase began at Brock Road in Pickering, and continued for approximately 10 kilometres into Scarborough before the van crashed while attempting to exit at Meadowvale Road.

The driver was not impaired but the van had been reported stolen from somewhere in Peel Region, police said.

Parts of the pursuit were captured by Ministry of Transportation cameras positioned on the highway.

A 31-year-old man is currently in custody, Durham police confirmed, and charges are pending.

No injuries have been reported.

Police continue to investigate.
