The province’s police watchdog has laid a charge against a Niagara police officer after a man was seriously injured following an arrest in Niagara Falls this past summer.

Police were called to a drugstore in Niagara Falls to investigate a complaint about an assault on Aug. 16.

An officer found a man behind a business on Thorold Stone Road and arrested him.

“There was an interaction between the man and the officer which resulted in serious injuries to the man,” The province’s Special investigations Unit said in a news release.

The SIU did not release any further details about the incident.

Sgt. Michael Baxter has been charged with assault causing bodily harm.

He is set to make a court appearance in in St. Catharines on Nov. 14.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates any incident involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or an allegation of sexual assault.
