An 18-year-old baggage handler is in hospital in critical condition after two service vehicles collided on the apron at Pearson Airport’s Terminal 3 last week.

Peel Regional Police Const. Lily Fitzpatrick said the baggage handler from Mississauga was driving a motorized baggage dolly in a marked area of the paved apron of the terminal on Thursday, Aug. 20, when it collided with a vehicle used to refuel planes.

The 18-year-old was thrown from his vehicle and taken to a local hospital, before being transported to a trauma centre in Toronto in critical condition.

The refueling vehicle is used as part of the refueling process but Fitzpatrick said it does not actually carry any aviation fuel.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour, Airport Aviation Safety officers and the Peel Regional Police major collision bureau attended the scene, Fitzpatrick said, but Ministry of Labour and Aviation Safety officers are conducting the investigation.

Investigators do not suspect foul play. Fitzpatrick could not say if charges are possible or pending in relation to this incident.
