Toronto police have arrested two men in connection with separate human trafficking investigations connecting Toronto and Ottawa.

In the first case, a 30-year-old woman was forced into the sex trade and required to earn a daily quota of $2,000 while travelling between the two cities.

The woman was forced to turn over her earning and was assaulted when she tried to leave, police said.

On Friday, a 36-year-old Toronto man was arrested in connection with the case.

Michael Stephen Johnson faces 10 charges, including trafficking in persons by recruiting, assault and forcible confinement.

In the second investigation, police said an 18-year-old woman was coerced through threats and forced to work as an exotic dancer and sex trade worker over a two-week period, also travelling between Toronto and Ottawa.

The woman was also forced to turn over her earnings.

A suspect was arrested in connection with the investigation Sunday.

Ashor Anwia, 20, of Ottawa, faces six charges, including trafficking in persons by recruiting, forcible confinement and material benefit resulting from trafficking in persons.

Police could not comment on whether the two cases were connected. Both men were scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.

In both investigations, police believe there may be more victims.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to contact investigators at 416-808-7474 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
