Police are canvassing a west end neighbourhood for information in the wake of a number of recent shootings, including one that left a 15-year-old boy with serious injuries in the early hours of Friday morning.

Officers will be going door-to-door in the Windermere Avenue and Swansea Mews area throughout the day.

The canvass is being done to reassure residents that police are working to address the surge in violent crime in the neighbourhood and to appeal for information in a number of unsolved cases.

“We have had a lot of shootings in this area over 2016 but we are here to try to prevent that,” Sgt. Chris Boddy told CP24 on Saturday. “We know with help from the community we will not only prevent these shootings from happening but also put the people that are committing these violent acts behind bars where they belong.”

There have been a number of shootings in and around the Swansea neighbourhood in recent months.

The most recent shooting occurred in the area of Windermere Avenue and The Queensway early Friday morning and left a 15-year-old boy with serious injuries.

Speaking with CP24, Boddy said that residents are “as frustrated as police” with the violence. Boddy, however, said that residents need to do their part to put the perpetrators behind bars.

“It is hard to solve these without a community involvement,” he said. “We have a great relationship with members of community and we will keep striving to build that relationship but we really need community members to come forward when we have these violent events.”

Today’s outreach effort was planned prior to Friday’s shooting.
