Police say a 70-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly stole more than $120,000 from an elderly Bowmanville woman who gave him power of attorney.

According to Durham Regional Police, in May 2009 the accused was given access to the bank accounts of a family friend, who was in her late 80s and unable to make financial decisions on her own.

Police say at some point, the accused admitted the woman into a long-term care facility.

When the woman passed away in 2015, police say members of her family noticed that large amounts of money were missing from the woman’s estate.

The observation prompted police to launch an investigation and officers have now laid charges in connection with the case.

Lawrence Henderson, a 70-year-old Hastings resident, has been charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Det.- Const. Gomez at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2704.
