Police have released surveillance camera images of a man wanted in connection with a violent sexual assault in midtown Toronto early Saturday morning.

According to police, a 28-year-old woman exited a northbound TTC bus in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue at around 3 a.m. and was followed off the bus by the suspect.

Police say the suspect then approached the woman from behind and sexually assaulted her.

"She confronted him, told him to stop and that’s when he initiated a brutal, violent, unprovoked attack," Const. David Hopkinson told CP24.

Police allege the man repeatedly punched the woman in the head.

Following a violent struggle, police say the man fled the scene.

"I don’t believe (the victim) was hospitalized but I do believe she has some fairly significant injuries from this attack," Hopkinson added.

The suspect is described as being 25 to 35-years-old, about five-foot-nine to five-foot-eleven with a medium complexion, a skinny build and short black hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a tan waist-length jacket.

“We are hoping the public can help us find this man," Hopkinson said.

"We have to get him off the street."
