Police have arrested and charged a 49-year-old man in connection with a string of overnight break-and-enters at a number of restaurants in the Scarborough area.

According to police, the suspect has broken into eight different restaurants since July 4 with the latest incident occurring in the Port Union Road and Sheppard Avenue area on Tuesday.

In each of the incidents, police say the suspect forced his way inside the business during the overnight hours and then stole a large sum of cash.

Five of the eight robberies have taken place over the last week with the suspect allegedly breaking into two separate restaurants in the Markham Road and Steeles Avenue East area on Sunday.

Douglas Belanger, 49, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with 29 offences, including eight counts of break and enter and eight counts of disguise with intent.

Police say they believe that the suspect might be responsible for other robberies.
