A Toronto police officer remains in critical condition today following a two-vehicle crash in the city’s west end.

Const. John Zivcic, 34, underwent several emergency surgeries after his cruiser collided with another vehicle late Saturday afternoon.

Speaking with CP24 outside St. Michael’s Hospital on Sunday, Deputy Police Chief Peter Sloly confirmed that Zivcic remains in critical condition inside the hospital and asked members of the public to keep him in their thoughts as he fights for his life.

“No status changes, just keep him in your thoughts and prayers and that’s all we can ask,” Sloly said. “The family is up there, there are officers from across the city coming down to offer support and we are doing everything we can do to keep the family supported.”

A divisional traffic officer with seven years on the force, Zivcic was responding to call when the collision happened near Bloor Street West and Neilson Drive, just west of Highway 427.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are not known, but Traffic Services is investigating.

Meanwhile as police investigate the collision, officers from across the city are descending on St. Michael’s Hospital to visit Zivcic and offer support to his family, which includes his brother, his sister and his mother.

“Our primary concern right now is just helping them get through this horrific time,” Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack told CP24 outside the hospital. “They are completely devastated. I don’t know how else to describe it.”

Zivcic has been with 22 division for his entire policing career and was known as a "dedicated" officer within the force, McCormack said.

"This has just sent a whole chill across the entire Toronto Police Service," he said.
