A four kilometre stretch of Highway 401 in Mississauga will be widened from six to twelve lanes, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Friday.

The highway will swell to 12 lanes between the Credit River and Hurontario Street, just east of where highways 410 and 403 empty onto the 401.

Construction will begin sometime later this year and the expansion will be complete by the fall of 2019. The cost of the project is estimated to be $81 million and the construction will support as many as 800 jobs.

When finished, the stretch of highway will contain 10 general purpose lanes and two high occupancy vehicle lanes.

The province says it’s spending more than $2.1 billion on roads and bridges this year.
