It appears former mayor Rob Ford’s effort to sell his tie on eBay has spawned a spinoff auction criticizing the post on the online bidding site.

On Wednesday Ford made headlines after he took to eBay to sell the tie he wore when he famously admitted to smoking crack cocaine on live television. Ford said that 10 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of the tie would go to Princess Margaret Hospital. He said Thursday afternoon that the rest of the money would go to other charities though he has yet to determine which ones.  Part of the money will be paid to eBay for hosting the auction.

One man questioned why Ford – a current city councillor and successful businessman – committed 10 per cent to one charity and took to eBay to make his point.

“I'm selling the tie I wore when I watched Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admit to smoking crack cocaine on live television,” the user posted Thursday. “All proceeds (unlike Ford himself) go to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.”

As of Friday morning, the highest bid for the user’s multi-coloured pastel tie sat at $16.50.

By contrast Ford’s tie, which features the logos of various National Football league teams, had already garnered 95 bids as of Friday at 8:30 a.m., with the highest sitting at $9,150.

However not all users agreed with the criticism of Ford.

“To be fair, it's his tie though,” one reddit user posted. “If he was selling off left over city property of things he purchased with expense accounts i'd be up in arms too. Wouldn't we rather just ignore him and let him fade away?”

The auction for Ford’s tie will be open until March 4, while the alternative tie will be up for grabs until March 5.
