The province’s Special Investigations Unit says it is investigating after a 50-year-old man suffered a serious head injury during an interaction with Toronto police on Friday night.

The SIU says police were called to St. Clair West subway station at about 6 p.m. Friday evening for reports of a fight underway.

Police found a man they believe was involved in the fight about 100 metres from the station a short time later.

The SIU says there was an interaction between several police officers and the man.

He suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital for treatment.

SIU investigators have designated seven witness officers in this investigation.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to probe the incident.

It is likely that several people witnessed the incident given its location and the time of day, SIU investigators say.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is called to investigate all incidents involving Ontario police services that result in death, serious injury, or an allegation of sexual assault.
