The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a woman carrying a knife was struck twice by police with a conducted energy weapon during an arrest in Hamilton early Monday morning.

The SIU says that just before 1 a.m., a taxi driver was driving in the area of Hunter Street East and John Street South in Hamilton when he came across a 31-year-old woman brandishing a large knife.

The cab driver alerted Hamilton Police officers who were nearby.

The SIU says an interaction occurred between the woman and officers in which a police conducted energy weapon was fired twice.

The woman was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in the city and admitted for treatment of unknown injuries.

SIU investigators say they have designated one subject officer and four witness officers as part of the probe.

Four SIU investigators and one forensic investigator have been tasked to investigate.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is called to investigate any incident involving Ontario police officers and the public that results in death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.
