Family, friends and community members gathered at a vigil Monday night for a teenager fatally shot outside a North York townhouse over the weekend.

Seventeen-year-old Caheem Ramsuchit was visiting friends at a home on Shoreham Court, near Jane Street, when several shots were fired at him as he stood in the backyard at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

He was rushed to hospital by friends, where he was later pronounced dead.

At Monday’s vigil, participants laid flowers and lit candles outside the townhouse.

“We’re truly grateful for the support of the community,” Ramsuchit’s aunt, Tanya Monteith, told CP24.

“This shows that Caheem has touched many lives – he’s loved by many.”

She said the death of her nephew – who grew up in the neighbourhood where he was fatally shot – has had an impact on the community as a whole.

Her message – to those responsible and the community – was simple.

“We’re asking for this to stop,” Monteith said. “My nephew’s only 17 years old – he hasn’t even lived his life yet. His birthday was just the other day, and to know that he’s gone like this, this is just not right.”

The family has created a Go Fund Me page to raise money to help cover funeral costs.

On Saturday, police said that four to six shots were fired at Ramsuchit from over a fence by two suspects who arrived and fled in a dark-coloured sport utility vehicle.

Ramsuchit was not known to police, but investigators have said they believe he was targeted.

No arrests have been made in connection with the killing so far.
