The latest Forum Research poll has John Tory and Doug Ford surging ahead of Olivia Chow who was the frontrunner for several months in Toronto’s mayoral race till the end of July.

In the phone survey of 1,167 people, 43 per cent of people said they would vote for John Tory. Doug Ford has 33 per cent support and Olivia Chow trails in third place with 20 per cent support.

The poll results which were released Tuesday morning show that Tory widened his lead over Ford by three percentage points since last week’s Forum Research poll. He leads in the former city of Toronto, York, East York and Etobicoke. Ford leads in North York while the two rival candidates are more or less tied in Scarborough.

Chow’s support has been steadily waning since early July when 36 per cent of voters said they would choose her as mayor. She made a little headway in mid-September around the time Rob Ford’s cancer diagnosis forced him to drop out of the race and led to a last-minute family decision for his brother Doug Ford to replace him on the ballot.

Forum Research President Lorne Bozinoff said that although Chow’s resurgence was “short-lived,” it is still too early to determine who Torontonians will elect on Oct. 27.

"This is an improvement for John Tory since last week, and it appears Olivia Chow's resurgence was short‐lived,” Bozinoff said. “However, with basically the length of an entire federal election campaign to go before the election, it's too early to say either of the two leaders has an insurmountable advantage.”

Another poll by Mainstreet Technologies released Monday showed similar results with Tory in the lead with 37 per cent support, and Ford not too far behind with 30 per cent support. Chow came in third place again with 21 per cent support.
