The cost to use the Toronto Transit Commission will rise Sunday when previously announced fare increases take effect.

The cash cost of a one-way trip on the TTC will rise by 25 cents from $3.00 to $3.25, and the cost of a trip using a token or a Presto electronic fare card will rise from $2.80 to $2.90.

Metropasses, which have increased in cost by nearly 22 per cent over the last six years, will remain $141.50 per month.

But service is set to improve as well, with subway service starting at 8 a.m. on Sundays instead of 9 a.m.

The early start is part of a series of service increases promised by Mayor John Tory and TTC Chair Josh Colle, which includes 10 minute or better service frequency on most routes, and more frequent off-peak streetcar and bus service.

The fare increases are needed in part to patch a $58 million hole in the commission’s 2016 budget.

Other fare increases include a $1.50 increase in the cost of a weekly pass and 50 cent increase to the cost of a single day or family pass.

The TTC’s operating budget is projected to be $1.7 billion in 2016.
