Subway riders will notice a change at Bloor-Yonge Station as the TTC tests signs and maps that identify subway lines with numbers and colours to make it easier for new riders and visitors to navigate the system.

Taking a page from larger cities such as Paris and New York that use a numbered system, the TTC is identifying the Yonge-University-Spadina line as Line 1 (yellow circle) and the Bloor-Danforth route as Line 2 (green circle).

The numbered and colour-coded routes are part of a pilot project that was approved by the TTC’s commissioners last year. The new signs are being displayed alongside existing signs at Bloor-Yonge and they will soon go up at St. George Station.

Toronto’s subway lines are currently named for the primary streets they run under, but the TTC says they can be confusing for people who are not familiar with the street names.

Once the pilot project wraps up, the TTC will solicit feedback from riders and consider using numbers and colours on a permanent basis.

If that happens, the Scarborough RT would become Line 3 and the Sheppard subway line would become Line 4.

Internally, the TTC already uses numbers to refer to the subway lines. The pilot project’s second purpose is to standardize maps and signs across the system.
