This fall, the TTC will be ramping up off-peak service on 33 bus and streetcar routes across the city to help alleviate transit congestion.

The announcement was made by Mayor John Tory and TTC Chair Josh Colle at a news conference at Finch Station on Monday morning.

The service improvements, Tory says, reverse service cuts made under the Ford administration in February 2012 and are in addition to the 61 routes that were previously announced earlier this summer.

Twenty-six bus routes and seven streetcar routes, including the 36 Finch West bus, the 505 Dundas streetcar, the 504 King streetcar and the 501 Queen streetcar, will have increased off-peak service.

“These are the city’s busiest bus and streetcar routes and so it means more buses and streetcars on the road," Tory told reporters Monday.

"I think these are, simply put, the kind of sensible, rational, timely investments that people expect us to be making and it allows for service improvements to be right around the corner."

According to the city, 55 million trips are taken each year on these 33 routes and the extra service is expected to result in an additional 1.8 million new customer trips annually.

The increased service is expected to begin in September however a specific start date has not been decided.
