Two homes have been completely gutted by fire and another has been damaged after a three-alarm blaze in a west-end neighbourhood.

The fire started in a car parked in the garage of a semi-detached home on Sun Valley Drive near Dundas and Jane streets at around 12:45 p.m. and quickly spread to the adjoining residence and a detached home next door.

About 50 firefighters then responded to the call, knocking the blaze down after about an hour.

It is not immediately known what allowed the fire to spread so quickly but Division Commander Bob O'Hallarn told reporters at the scene that heavy winds may have played a role.

“It could be wind conditions. The wind has changed two or three times so perhaps it just managed to blow some of the flames. Once it gets into the overhang of the roof it can quickly spread and once it gets in there it can be very hard to fight,” he said.

Nobody was home in any of the homes involved in the fire and no injuries were reported.

The damage is expected to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and the fire marshal has been notified as a result.

Sun Valley Drive is closed in both directions as crews continue to put out hot spots.
