The uncle of a 14-year-old girl that was fatally shot inside a Rexdale home at the outset of the summer is calling on Toronto Community Housing residents to step up and report any information they have about criminal activity in their buildings and neighbourhoods.

Troy Ross, whose niece Lecent Ross died after a shooting inside a TCHC townhouse on Jamestown Crescent, was among several speakers at an event promoting a new partnership between Crime Stoppers and the TCHC on Thursday.

The partnership will see Crime Stoppers install signage in TCHC buildings and conduct other outreach work, including meetings with residents.

“You don’t need to be ‘cool’ and stand back and watch another person die. We just want information to prevent another senseless killing like the one that happened to my niece,” Ross said at the press conference. “She was only 14 years old, a young girl inspired to do great things and now she isn’t here with us.”

The circumstances surrounding Ross’ death remain unknown, however an 18-year-old male and a 13-year-old boy have been charged in connection with the case.

Speaking on the same street where Lecent Ross breathed her last breath on July 9, Troy Ross said that Torontonians need to start doing their part to help reduce crime in their neighbourhoods.

“If I can do anything to help prevent another person from dying or help prevent a crime I will, I will call into Crime Stoppers,” Ross said.
