A woman believed to be in her 30s has been rushed to a local trauma centre after a stabbing downtown, Toronto Paramedic Services says.

The incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. at 385 Yonge St., located near Yonge and Gerrard streets.

Paramedics say the woman suffered multiple lacerations and stab wounds.

The stabbing took place as a large crowd of people were lined up to collect social assistance cheques nearby.

Police at the scene told CP24 it’s possible the stabbing took place elsewhere before the victim made her way to the area.

Police say one suspect is believed to be at large. He is described as a black male around 50 years of age, standing about six-foot-three. He was last seen wearing a black leather jacket over a brown hoodie.

The motive for the stabbing is not yet clear.
