Ontario Provincial Police say they have found the wreckage of a single engine plane reported missing more than 23 years ago, in a remote wooded area southwest of Kapuskasing, Ont.

Police said they were called to the area on Thursday. The OPP’s emergency response team and aviation services officers went to the scene and verified that the wreckage belonged to a plane that was reported missing in April, 1992.

Police say Paul and Suzanne Joanis were in the plane, flying from Buttonville Airport in Markham to Hearst, Ont., about 100 kilometres west of Kapuskasing, on April 28, 1992. Police said the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers about 56 kilometres southwest of Kapuskasing.

An extensive search was conducted in an around Kapuskasing at the time.

The Transportation Safety Board and the regional coroner’s officer have been notified and will participate in the investigation.
