For the second year, Torontonians and those across Canada alike will have the opportunity to thank and honour our country’s war veterans this weekend through a campaign organized by a local hospital.

Through Operation Raise a Flag, the public will once again be able to write messages of appreciation to war veterans commemorating Remembrance Day on Nov. 11.

“We’re looking forward to this year’s Raise a Flag event being even bigger and more powerful,” Dr. Barry McLellan, president and CEO of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, said in a press release this week.

The messages are attached to Canadian flags and planted outside the hospital for veterans to see when they awake on Sunday.

“The average age of our Second World War and Korean War veterans is 90 and this campaign is another wonderful way to remember the men and women who served our country in the name of freedom,” McLellan said.

Flags come in two sizes, reflecting either a 20 or $50 donation, and can be purchased by calling the Sunnybrook Foundation at 416-480-4483 or by clicking here.

Proceeds from this year’s campaign will go towards the Veterans Comfort Fund and the Sunnybrook Veterans Grant a Wish initiative.

The Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, home to 500 veterans, is Canada’s largest veterans care facility.
