It isn't just Toronto's residents who are having a hard time pushing through the cold -- it's the city's parking meters as well.

More than a dozen parking meters went dead as a result of the extremely cold temperatures that have been plaguing the province since Tuesday night.

According to the Toronto Parking Authority, the meters' batteries stopped working because of the cold.

An extreme cold weather alert remains in effect Thursday after a second full day of double-digit low temperatures, which caused black ice and several accidents on the roads.

Police are warning motorists to drive cautiously during this cold snap, saying road salt loses its ability to melt the ice when temperatures get low enough.

On the 401 westbound, east of Mississauga Road, a tractor trailer jack-knifed, causing some delays. Another crash involving a truck on the Northbound 400 at Highway 88 blocked off a few lanes of traffic.

The temperatures are expected to remain cold on Friday as well before warming up for the weekend.
