Toronto City Hall has issued an extreme cold weather alert Tuesday as frigid temperatures and wind chill moved into the GTA.

The alert remains in effect until further notice, and prompts the city to activate additional support services to get homeless people in from the cold.

While temperatures stayed around the freezing mark all day long, the deep freeze began setting in after sundown with a rush of Arctic air.

The cold snap is expected to continue until at least Thursday, when temperatures are forecast to go drop below -20 Celsius -- without the wind chill factor.

Areas east of the city could see temperatures go as low as -30.

While the city began getting its first taste of the frigid temperature, areas to the north have also been dealing with heavy snowfall. In Barrie, heavy snow began falling at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, with 10 to 15 centimetres expected to fall overnight.
