The TTC says it has found a way to help reduce delays caused by medical emergencies by stationing paramedics in the transit system.

The new addition comes after a pilot project showed an emergency service presence reduced train delays caused by ill passengers.

In August, the TTC placed a paramedic at the Yonge-Bloor station.

A team is now available at Spadina station during the morning rush hour and there are also teams at Eglinton and Union stations, The Toronto Star reports.

In 2007, ill passengers accounted for more than 49 hours of lost service.

The program will cost the TTC about $200,000 a year. Part of that money will be used to hire new paramedics.
