The federal government will begin sending out more than a billion dollars worth of HST transition money to millions of Ontario residents next week.

The cheques are part of the plan meant to ease the pain of the much-maligned harmonized sales tax. They will cost the federal government $4.3 billion.

Single parents or a couple earning less than $160,000 a year will get $330. Single people earning less than $80,000 a year will receive about $100.

Additional payments will be sent out in December and June 2011.

A cheque will be mailed out or deposited in a bank account. The money is tax-free and will not count as income, but only people who filed a tax return for 2009 will get the payment.

The HST, which combines provincial sales tax with federal GST, will kick in on July 1.
