VAUGHAN, Ont. - Police say a BMW driver who bragged about his speeding on a social networking site was later convicted on careless driving charges.

York Regional Police say Vladimir Rigenco, 19, of Vaughan, Ont., is banned from driving for six months and sentenced to 12 months probation after he entered a guilty plea.

He must also complete a remedial driving program and pay a fine of $1,000.

Police say a U.S. man contacted officers in early April about a social networking website for BMW fans, where a suspect had posted a message saying he drove his car 100 km/hr over the speed limit in Vaughan.

The online community reacted to the post and urged the driver to slow down and be more cautious.

On April 16, officers arrested and charged Rigenco in connection with the careless driving incident.

He was convicted Aug. 5.
