A strike deadline for bus drivers in parts of Toronto's three school districts has been extended to Monday as negotiators try to hammer out a new contract.

The Thursday deadline has been pushed back to Monday to give negotiators more time to work on a deal to avoid a strike that would leave parents scrambling to get their kids to school by other means.

A strike would affect up to 7,000 students.

The 600 drivers, represented by the Canadian Auto Workers union, are employed by Stock Transportation in the northern and eastern areas of Toronto's school boards – public, Catholic and French.

Last week, they voted 91 per cent in favour of strike action and were scheduled to hit the picket lines if a deal wasn't reached by Thursday at 10:01 a.m.

Fair compensation

Debbie Montgomery, CAW Local 4268's president, told CP24 that talks are continuing and both sides are hoping to reach a resolution without any service disruption.

She said the drivers want fair compensation for the work that they do.

The drivers are concerned about their student passengers and their families, Montgomery said.

Contract talks have been ongoing since mid-September.
