Toronto police have made two arrests in connection with the murder of Leanne Freeman.

Freeman, 23, was found suffering from a fatal gunshot wound in the Port Lands on Nov. 29. She died in hospital a short time later.

On Friday afternoon police announced that Joseph Beauregard, 31, of Whitby, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the case.

Jonathan Ash, 23, has been arrested and charged with accessory after the fact.

Det. Sgt. Brian Borg told reporters that both suspects knew the victim for a "short period of time".

He added that the investigation is ongoing.

"It is not yet over," he said. "I'd encourage anybody still with information to come forward and provide assistance."

Three days after Freeman's death police announced that they had found her purse, bag and clothing in a garbage bin behind a commercial property in Scarborough.

At the time they said it was their belief that whoever dumped the items was also responsable for Freeman's death.

In announcing the arrest Friday, Borg said he was hopeful the news would provide closure.

"I hope this announcement today brings some sense of relief to Leanne's family and her many friends," he said.
