Three police officers suffered non life-threatening injuries in a confrontation with an "aggressive" man at Pearson International Airport on Monday morning, according to police in Peel region.

The man had to be Tasered to be brought under control during the incident, which occurred inside Terminal 1 at about 11 a.m., police told CP24.

The suspect created a disturbance when he refused to be searched while going through the screening area.

Peel police spokesman Const. George Tudos said officers were called to the department at international departures after a silent alarm was triggered by airport personnel. Tudos said the man was aggressive towards officers and police took action to bring the situation under control.

The suspect, Zhi Wei Chen, 23, of no fixed address, is currently being treated in an Etobicoke hospital.

Chen is facing one count of mischief under $5,000 and two counts of assault with intent to resist arrest, Peel police said. He is expected to be remanded Tuesday morning.

Officers were also injured in the melee. One of the officers was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries, but he will be OK, Tudos said. Two other officers suffered minor facial injuries. The extent of the suspect's injuries isn't known.

The province's Special Investigations Unit has not been called in to probe the case the way they usually do when a citizen is seriously injured or killed while in the presence of police.

Police will now be reviewing security cameras installed at the airport to try and determine what led to the incident.

Meanwhile, Greater Toronto Airports Authority officials told CP24 they had to close down the security checkpoint where the incident occurred for the police investigation.
