While spring may have gotten off to a foggy start in southern Ontario on Tuesday, the day quickly turned into another early-season scorcher breaking yet another temperature record.

While it may feel like spring arrived weeks ago due to unusually warm weather, the season didn't officially begin until Tuesday at 1:14 a.m.

Pretty soon, however, spring was already beginning to feel more like summer.

In Toronto, the temperature hit a record 21.9 C at Pearson International Airport Tuesday afternoon - more than triple the normal daytime high of 6 C for March 20 – and shattering the old record of 18.3 C set in 1976.

Hot streak to end soon

Double-digit temperatures will persist for a few more days before Toronto's hot streak comes to a crashing halt.

Highs of 25 C are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, before temperatures hover just above normal.

If the long-term forecast holds, Friday will bring a high of 13 C before highs of 8 C on Saturday and 12 C on Sunday, along with rain.

Toronto is saying goodbye to a mild winter that brought temperatures that were warmer than usual, including a welcome heat wave in the opening weeks of March.

Extreme cold weather alerts, issued by the City of Toronto, were in effect for just seven days through the entire season, compared with 10 in 2010-11, seven in 2009-10, and 27 in 2008-09.
