TORONTO -- Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore has won MLS player of the week honours for his two-goal performance Saturday in Vancouver against the Whitecaps.

The goals were the first for Altidore in Major League Soccer since he left to play in Europe in 2008.

The 25-year-old U.S. international scored in the 32nd minute in a nifty combination with Italian playmaker Sebastian Giovinco. Altidore added an insurance goal with a cheeky chipped penalty in the last minute of play after being taken down in the box by defender Pa Modou Kah.

It was Toronto's first-ever win at B.C. Place in MLS play.

Altidore is replacing English striker Jermain Defoe, who also scored twice in the 2014 Toronto season opener and was named player of the week.

The weekly player award is selected by a panel from the North American Soccer Reporters.
