The holiday weekend will get off to a cold start but the good news is that milder temperatures are on the way for Thanksgiving Monday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Newmarket, Barrie and Northern York and Durham regions, warning of a high pressure ridge that could cause temperatures to reach the freezing mark overnight and early Saturday morning, resulting in frost “in many parts of the region.”

The temperature, however, is expected to rebound quickly with sunny skies and a high of 15 C forecast for the Toronto-area on Saturday and sunny skies and highs of 20 C and 21 C forecast for Sunday and Monday.

Due to the cold temperatures early Saturday morning, Environment Canada is warning residents to cover up or bring their plants inside.

A low of 2 C is forecast for Toronto on Saturday.

The average daytime low this time of year is 7.7 C.
