MONTREAL - Canadians answered the call from speedskating star Clara Hughes to talk about mental illness.

Bell will donate just over $3.3 million to Canadian mental health initiatives, money raised during Wednesday's Bell Let's Talk Day.

Hughes, who overcame depression to capture six Olympic medals in speedskating and cycling, was the spokesperson for the program, which saw Bell donate five cents for every text message and long-distance call made that day.

"I'm very proud to be part of the conversation with you that is doing so much to promote health across our great country," Hughes said in a release.

A total of 66,079,236 text messages and long-distance calls were made by Bell and Bell Aliant customers on Wednesday.
