York Regional Police have charged a 15-year-old boy with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Const. Garrett Styles.

Styles passed away early Tuesday when the vehicle he pulled over sped off, dragging him 300 metres on Highway 48 near Newmarket.

The minivan eventually lost control pinning Styles beneath. Reports originally suggested the vehicle was stolen, but sources have now confirmed to CP24 that it was owned by the boy's parents.

The officer was able to radio for help and was rushed to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

The boy, who was the driver of the vehicle, was charged in hospital Tuesday night.

Sources have told CP24 that he has serious neck and back injuries and may be paralyzed.

He was transferred from SickKids Hospital to Toronto Western Hospital overnight.

His name will not be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on July 7.

A trust account in the name of Melissa Styles, widow of Const. Styles, has been set up at the Police Credit Union, located at 18025 Yonge St. in Newmarket.

The account number is 2000014 York Branch. The transit number is 63612.
