Following a week of TTC fare hikes and a massive service disruption, there are now there are calls for a transit riders union.

The call comes days after tens of thousands of people were stranded and left standing on the street due to a contractor error on a the Yonge subway line on Wednesday.

The Toronto Star reports similar unions are already in place in Edmonton and L.A. where riders pay fees to help prevent fare hikes and improve service.

Organizers have started a website called TTCriders.ca and they are modeling their group after the L.A. Bus Riders Union, the newspaper reports.

The website allows disgruntled TTC riders to send email messages to the transit commission, the premier, and the mayor’s office.
