PARIS - Canadian world champion Patrick Chan won the Trophee Bompard today, while ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir defended their lead in the free dance to take the ice dancing competition.

Chan overcame an error-strewn free program that saw him land awkwardly on two jumps and stumble on a step sequence.

The 20-year-old from Toronto started strongly by nailing a quad toe loop-triple toe loop combination, but then lost his balance during the circular step sequence.

Virtue, from London, Ont., and Moir, from Ilderton, Ont., beat defending champions Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat of France.

Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy finished third.
