The city is taking immediate steps to protect the public from crumbling pieces of cement falling off the Gardiner Expressway.

City council announced today it will close or protect sidewalks and lanes beneath the Gardiner Expressway that inspectors deem unsafe.

All pedestrian areas will be inspected and appropriately protected with nets by the end of Friday while all road lanes will be inspected by June 15.

The announcement comes just days after a large slab of concrete fell from the busy highway and shattered into pieces on the ground below. That was the third such incident in recent weeks.

No injuries were reported.

"No injury or traffic accidents have resulted from the three incidents, however there is a recognized heightened level of concern for both traffic and pedestrian safety beneath the Gardiner," said Director of Design and Construction Gord MacMillan in a briefing note released Wednesday. "Our priority will be the pedestrian locations, specifically major intersections and sidewalks beneath the Gardiner, followed by the roadway sections under the Gardiner."

According to the briefing note, the city will use additional crews so it can meet its own inspection deadlines.
