The City of Toronto will take over the cleanup of the Sunrise Propane explosion site, says Mayor David Miller.

Miller and city fire officials made the announcement Friday at a news conference, saying Sunrise -- the site of the massive Aug. 10 explosion -- has not provided a clear plan for its cleanup and numerous propane tanks remain on the property.

Fire officials are posted on the property to monitor the status of the tanks. They will remain there until all propane receptacles have been safely removed.

"To date, Sunrise hasn't done anything to clean up the site," says Patrick Burke, of the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office.

The company is Ministry of Environment orders to clean up its property. Sunrise was also ordered to clean up the surrounding neighbourhood, a project that was eventually taken up by the city after the company failed to act.

"Delay was not acceptable anymore," says the mayor. "We had no assurances they would act."
