A 16-year-old girl who collapsed while robbers ransacked her home on Saturday has died in hospital.

Toronto police are calling the incident a "suspicious death" and are awaiting the results of an autopsy that is scheduled for Tuesday.

"Until a post-mortem is conducted, I can't classify this as a homicide," said Det. Sgt. Frank Skubic at a news conference Monday afternoon.

The teen, who is severely disabled, had no apparent injuries. She was staying at home full-time with her parents as she was prone to seizures.

The young woman was immobile and at the time of the home invasion, she was in a reclined seating position on the main floor of the house, Skubic said.

The ordeal started Saturday morning at around 11:30 a.m. when two men wearing suits, overcoats and ski masks knocked at the family's Malvern-area home. As soon as the girl's 40-year-old mother unlocked the door, the men barged in and started demanding she give them a package.

One of the suspects stayed on the main floor while the second suspect, who was armed with a gun, tore through the Burrows Hall Boulevard house with the older woman, rummaging through cupboards, doors and drawers.

Finally, Skubic said, after not finding the package they were looking for, the men said they must have the wrong house and fled the scene.

The woman rushed to her daughter, only to find her not breathing. She quickly called 911 and the young girl was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The girl, who has not been publicly identified, passed away Sunday.

Authorities are still looking for the men involved in the home invasion.

Both suspects are about 5'9" and spoke with heavy accents.
